Quality Manager

Summary:

This position will be directly responsible for the Quality & Food Safety for a multi-faceted, multiple shift operation.  Responsibility includes managing of all Quality requirements with an emphasis on food safety, process & quality control, regulatory compliance, cost, company policy as well as other areas as determined by Management.  Accountable for developing and executing business plans from department goals and objectives to meet quality, safety and productivity key performance indicators (KPI’s).

This position will plan, coordinate, and direct all quality programs designed to ensure continuous production of products consistent with established standards across all segments of the plant.  Develops and analyzes statistical data and product specifications to determine present standards and establish proposed quality and reliability expectancy of finished product(s). Maintain GFSI documentation and certification including all customer and regulatory requirements, while meeting all expectations for food safety and quality.

This position will provide leadership to all workers who are engaged in quality inspections and testing activities to ensure continuous control over materials, facilities, and products.  Plans, promotes, and organizes training activities related to product quality and reliability. Review customer complaints.  Coordinate timely and accurate analyses, responses and corrective actions.  The Quality Manager reports directly to the facility Plant Manager with a hard dotted line reporting to Corporate Quality Assurance.

Primary Responsibilities:

Process:  Plans and schedules the Quality & Sanitation staffing (Internal and 3rd Party), supplies, process and equipment to meet required key performance indicators (KPI’s)

1.  Develop and implement all GFSI (SQF/BRC) Food Safety and Quality Programs along with serving as a resource to sanitation procedures and practices
2.  Ensure compliance with all internal and external procedures and regulations, such as HACCP, GMPs, Organic, GFCP & GFCO (gluten free) and applicable FDA and/or USDA regulations
3.  Troubleshoot, identify and address operating, quality, processes and equipment issues

People:  Builds alignment between Safety, Quality & Productivity principles and employee job performance

1.  Plans, identifies and implements training, development, and performance management
2.  Identifies and addresses employment and HR issues; maintains a strong understanding of the bargaining unit agreement
3.  Sources and assigns employees to meet performance requirements and quality standards

Financial:  Manages resources, controls costs in line with operating budget

1.  Provides input to operating budget
2.  Operates and adheres to budget standards regarding staffing and overtime costs including materials usage

3.  Tracks cost center actual to budget; Explains variances to plan
4.  Identifies and implements action plans

Strategic:  Identifies and implements improvement opportunities and resolves issues

1.  Analyzes processes, systems, equipment and performance trends across work areas
2.  Initiates root-cause analysis, recommends actions required to make improvements. Review the results of internal Quality System audits with the plant staff and initiate corrective actions
3.  Responsible for verification of the effectiveness of CAPA

Key Attributes for Success:
  • Detailed understanding of Micro requirements both product related and environmental
  • Detailed understanding of Sanitation requirements
  • Technical and Managerial skills to perform in area of specialty
  • Strong knowledge of FDA regulations
  • Strong knowledge of Lean Manufacturing including the 5S program
  • Perform effective problem solving and team building
  • Knowledge and understanding of GFSI (SQF) requirements; certified SQF Practitioner and PCQI
  • Ability to effectively prepare and interpret written communications and reports
  • Ability to understand and use all company software (SAP) applications and automated systems
  • Develop and implement all GFSI (SQF) Food Safety and Quality Programs
  • Care and use of required onsite facility personal protection equipment
  • Able to support 24/7 operations
Education:
BS Food Science, Biology, Chemistry or related field


Experience:
7-10 years Quality Management experience in the food industry; with experience in supervising or managing a large work force; statistical analysis and knowledge and experience in grain handling is preferred
