Senior Tax Accountant - Houston, TX
Primarily responsible for the state and local tax compliance functions (including income, franchise, and sales / use taxes) of Riviana Foods. Other responsibilities include participation in the state tax accounting function and overall minimization of the state and local tax burden for the company. Also, responsible for keeping abreast of changing tax regulations and accounting policies which affect the states where the entities have operations.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Preparation of state and local tax returns and related reports to ensure compliance with all state and local tax laws and regulations. Encompasses income, franchise, and other miscellaneous taxes for approximately 26 states. (Number of states may change over time.)
- Coordinate and handle state income and franchise tax audits.
- Coordinate with various authorities to resolve notices and adjustments related to the state income and franchise tax returns.
- Preparation of sales / use tax returns including the review of invoices for proper sales / use tax treatment for approximately eight states. (Number of states may change over time.)
- Coordination, preparation or review of sales tax exemption certificates, review of purchase orders for proper tax code and jurisdictions, maintaining proper tax codes in SAP, etc.
- Coordination and handling of sales / use tax audits.
- Coordinate with various authorities to resolve notices and adjustments related to the sales / use tax returns.
- Work closely with various plant personnel to ensure that purchase orders are proper for tax codes and tax jurisdictions.
- Conduct sales / use tax training at the various plant locations, as necessary.
- Work with outside consultants on sales / use tax reviews and certain incentives.
- Assist in preparation of monthly and annual state tax provisions, reconciliation of various tax accounts, etc.
- Preparation and / or review, as necessary, of claims for tax refunds, forecasts, and special tax studies.
- Analyze entity activities to determine proper state registration / withdrawal requirements.
- Research necessary items related to unclaimed property, file unclaimed property reports with funds to be submitted and assist Tax Control Clerk as necessary on negative unclaimed property reports.
- Assist Tax Manager with part of the federal tax return preparation and special projects.
- Monitor changes in state tax laws and pending legislation applicable to Riviana operations.
- Research issues and apply to compliance issues.
- Work Ethic—willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done (including special projects as they may arise).
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting
Work Expierience:
- 2-5+ years corporate taxation experience with a Big 4 firm or corporate tax department
- 2-5+ years of experience in state income and franchise tax return preparation
- 2-3 years of experience in state sales / use taxes
- 2-5+ years of experience in federal tax return preparation
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written)
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability and willingness to work under pressure with short deadlines
- Ability to work with all levels of corporate employees to resolve various accounting and tax-related issue
- SAP enterprise resource planning system
- Corptax tax compliance software
- MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
