Role Summary
The Packaging Supervisor reports to the Packaging Manager and is responsible for supervising a defined group of hourly personnel across one or more packaging departments. The supervisor ensures that daily operations are performed efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of safety, sanitation, quality, and productivity. This role also coordinates with Production, Maintenance, Warehouse, and Quality teams to support smooth operations and adherence to company policies and regulatory requirements.
What You’ll Do
- Assign and move personnel on production lines to meet operational requirements efficiently.
- Communicate daily with Plant Scheduler, Packaging and Warehouse Supervisors, and Managers regarding line status and upcoming requirements.
- Coordinate packaging supply requirements with Warehouse, Supply Operators, and Production teams.
- Maintain daily shift logs for labor and machine utilization; assign proper cost center placements in time and attendance systems.
- Oversee rice transfers from Clean Rice and Processing Departments to ensure packaging schedules are met.
- Notify Maintenance Supervisors of equipment malfunctions and coordinate required maintenance.
- Direct and train personnel on-line duties, responsibilities, and safety procedures.
- Participate in line adjustments and troubleshooting, including code dates, glue adjustments, rail adjustments, and limited changeovers.
- Manage employee relations, resolve conflicts, and maintain positive team dynamics.
- Negotiate labor problem resolutions with Union Stewards as required.
- Maintain strict GMP, HACCP, and sanitation procedures in assigned areas.
- Document Master Sanitation Schedules, Food Incident Reports, Magnet Logs, and other required administrative records.
- Monitor product quality (rice, ingredients, packaging, weight control) in collaboration with QC personnel.
- Conduct safety meetings and enforce workplace safety policies.
- Compile and submit daily packaging reports (production and downtime data) to the Packaging Superintendent.
- Communicate company policies and enforce disciplinary actions for non-compliance.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment consistent with 5S standards.
What We’re Looking For
- High School Diploma required; College degree preferred.
- Knowledge of Food Safety Initiatives (GFSI) or Safe Quality Foods (SQF) standards preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience in manufacturing or a related environment; food manufacturing experience preferred.
- Exposure to quality procedures and team-based work environments.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in English (read, write, speak).
- Leadership ability to direct and train team members.
- Basic math skills, including ratios, timing, and equipment speed calculations.
- PC, RF scanners, tablets, HMIs.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to climb and work at heights exceeding 100 feet.
- Physical strength to lift and handle objects up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in various positions: stooping, sitting, bending, etc.
- Corrected or natural eyesight sufficient for safe operation; hearing adequate for plant conditions.
- Ability to communicate effectively over background noise.
- Scheduled shifts with potential unscheduled shifts, weekends, and emergency callouts.
- High exposure to plant noise and seasonal moderate exposure to heat/cold.
- Primarily works on the production floor in a food manufacturing environment.
