About the Role
The Controls Engineer supports the RTS Operation by designing, maintaining, troubleshooting and modifying the automation infrastructure, the logic controllers in the machinery with their respective field transducer and actuators and all the associated control and monitoring software. The Controls Engineer also performs routine to difficult engineering assignments, which require knowledge and skills in electronics, electricity, automation equipment and structured programming languages. The Controls Engineer also provides support to the Maintenance Supervisors and Mechanics while troubleshooting equipment.

What You’ll Do

  • Designing, implementing, and supporting MES, PLC, HMI, and SCADA software for control systems and equipment.
  • Designing, implementing, and supporting electrical hardware systems.
  • Understanding manufacturing processes and process instrumentation.
  • Investigating and solving complex problems related to the RTS Operation.
  • Demonstrating solid rapport with Operators, Mechanics, and Supervisors.
  • Addressing on-call requests as needed.
  • Being a self-starter that can work both independently and in team-based project environments.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with operations by participating in planning meetings to ensure open communication while supporting plant production goals.
  • May utilize information from vendor prints, catalogs, technical manuals, etc. to do engineering work.
  • Mentors/trains less experienced mechanics and uses time efficiently.
  • Performs automation/controls programming and engineering functions in accordance with accepted practices and company standards.
  • Provides advanced troubleshooting on existing PLC/HMI programming.
  • Modify existing or create new PLC and HMI programming for small to medium sized projects and/or upgrades.
  • Investigates equipment performance and identifies any problems for corrective actions and solutions.
  • Works closely with all internal team members to identify issues and implement improvements.
  • Serves as the primary resource for resolving electrical issues involving controls operation and safety.
  • Provides engineering support to corrective actions and deviations by identifying root cause and offering solutions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering discipline. Electrical engineering or Automation Software Engineering preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience with a Technical or Management Degree or 3 years in a similar position.
  • Knowledge of programing software: RSLOGIX 5000, STUDIO 5000, Factory Talk Studio.
  • Experience with computer networks (OSI Model, Routers, Switches, IP Addresses, etc)
  • Programming languages dominium (Python, C, VB) and databases (SQL query language).
  • Knowledge of manufacturing operations, processes, and customer base.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Strong communication skills across functional lines, at all levels, and in presentations and conducting meetings.
  • Ability to manage and lead in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high stress, emergency, and crisis situations.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to set priorities and execute multiple assignments in a timely manner.

Working Condition
The physical requirements listed below represent those necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this role:

  • Splits time between an office environment and plant areas.
  • Regular exposure to loud noises, vibrations, and running machinery when on the production floor.
  • May work in areas with varying temperatures, including warm process areas, outdoor structures, or cooler storage spaces.
  • Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, or chemical odors, depending on the plant’s processes.
  • Must be able to walk long distances, climb stairs or ladders occasionally, and navigate around equipment.
  • Required to wear appropriate PPE (e.g., safety glasses, steel‑toe boots, ear protection, hard hat) when entering plant areas.
  • Requires strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
